Betty Boop first appeared in 1930 in a cartoon entitled "Dizzy Dishes" animated by Grim Natwick. Betty started out being designed as a human-like dog, with only her black button nose and floppy ears hinting at her canine nature. The ears later became her round earrings. The inspiration for Betty's spit curls and high pitch voice were taken from Helen Kane who was commonly called the "Boop Oop a Doop Girl". Her first starring role was in "Betty Coed" (1931), which also marked the first time the name Betty was connected with the character. In "Any Rags" (1932), Betty Boop became completely human, and her ears permanently became earrings. As for her famous garter, Betty Boop started out with two, then some early drawings that showed her still with ears and the garter on her right leg. When she became a regular and her features were officially set, the garter moved to her left leg, and stayed there. Betty's series ended in 1939 in "Yip Yip Yippy". In the following years she appeared in poorly colored re-releases on television. Her real revival came during the late 60's and early 70's, when her cartoons began to appear in the late night shows at college town theaters as part of psychedelic light shows.
